Top 10 Cap to be a reality

The E-N has a report that the Texas Senate has approved a cap to the Top 10 admission rule. I knew this would happen because UT wanted it. I can imagine other schools like Texas State and Texas Tech are going to be happy about it because those kids that get locked out of UT will need to go somewhere.

I also liked the part about Senator Tommy Williams claiming his worst vote ever was for tuition deregulation. Tuition has gone up a ton and will only continue to grow. This idea of combining the free market with education is only going to make our best public universities accessible only to the rich.

Texas, Under God

Texas Legislator Debbie Riddle has filed House Bill 1034 to change the text of the Pledge to the Texas flag to include the words "under God" just as the Pledge to the US flag does. As if the citizens of Texas didn't know we were part of Jesusland. Of course, the pledge is forcibly recited daily in Texas schools so it will help get future Texans committed to creating a GOP controlled theocracy.

Cancer is better than sex

Last week Rick Perry announced that all girls would be required to be vaccinated with HPV vaccine Gardasil.

Some legislators would rather women get cervical cancer because to vaccinate them would encourage premarital sex which is the real  complaint.

Much like the crackpots on the religious right view AIDS as punishment, it appears that cervical cancer is Jesus smiting the whores.

Lost opportunities on education funding

The Legislature appears to be receiving a warning about the alarming dropout rate. But the GOP is missing an opportunity here. The more students that drop out the fewer there are to fund. And the more money that can be given back in tax cuts. Why do these people who want to prevent dropouts hate Texas so much?

And this is bad why?

Are you kidding me? Bars open 24/7? Yeah, this whole "prove you're a guest" thing isn't susceptible to fraud.

Who cares? Bars open 24/7 only makes Texas better. Sam Houston is weeping tears of joy in his grave right now.

Of course it's unfair....Mexicans benefit from it

David Dewhurst and Jeff Wentworth want to change the Top Ten Percent law.

Wentworth is quoted in the E-N article as saying that the law is "fundamentally unfair". Of course it is. It helps Mexicans. What could a Republican in Texas think is more unfair than that?

You mean.....he lied?

The Express-News reports that hours after David Dewhurst promised funding to make Texas A&M-San Antonio a reality, the first draft budget includes no such funds.

I know Senator Uresti is promising to follow up on these funds, but pardon me if I don't believe a word out of Dewhurst's mouth. The fear is that the South Side school will suffer the same fate at the Pharmacy school at A&M-Kingsville, or the Texas Tech Medical School in El Paso; Those schools were built but have sat around empty because the Legislature wouldn't give them funds. Will the Texas A&M System choose a site then sit around waiting for the Lege just like the folks in El Paso and Kingsville?

Tom Craddick's days may be numbered according to Jim Pitts and this article in the Express-News. While this isn't entirely San Antonio related, having a Speaker of the House not named Tom Craddick is good for every city, county, business, school, person and animal in this state.

You won't be missed, Tom.
