The Fat Lady Sings for Dan Cook

Anyone who grew up in San Antonio that is older than 25 knows the legend that was Dan Cook. The lodestar of sports journalism for half a century has passed.

I had the good fortune of working for a bank during the summers in college. Mr. Cook would come in every week to deposit a check. He was always friendly and chatty with us. I even mentioned to him my last week, before I headed back for my senior of college, that I really enjoyed his Benjamin P. Broadhind columns.

San Antonio has lost a legend. Rest in peace, Mr. Cook.

There are no asterisks.....

The Spurs have won their 4th NBA Title. Unfortunately, some whiny bitches in Arizona can't just accept that the better team won the conference semis. Check this image from the ESPN "Are the Spurs a Dynasty poll".

Well, like Ari Gold said in Entourage "There are no asterisks in this life, only scoreboards".

Follow up on UIW Football

The UIW press conference about their new football team yielded this great quote from President Louis Agnese:

"We've been developing professional schools, graduate programs, sports programs, and this is just one more thing," Agnese said. "In Texas you can't be a university and not have football. So it was time."

Nice slap at St. Mary's. Can StMU really afford to take that crap lying down? I don't think so. That should be more than enough motivation to add a football team. Hell, they could just renovate VJ Keefe to make it suitable for baseball and football and kill two birds with one stone.  

Don't let UIW leave us behind, President Cotrell. Take action now.

UIW to add football

According to the E-N a football team will be added at Incarnate Word starting as early as 2009.

Can St. Mary's let UIW do this without adding football themselves? UIW/StMU is San Antonio's only college rivalry. It has to move from to the gridiron now, doesn't it?

C'mon St. Mary's. Add football!

This just in: Brad Lidge Sucks!

The home run Albert Pujols hit off Brad Lidge in Game 5 of the 2005 NLCS has scarred Lidge for life. He's a complete headcase now.

The home run he gave up in the 9th against the friggin' PIRATES is proof that this year will feature more blown saves. Purpura and Garner are bordering on gross negligence here in sticking with Lidge.

Nice quote by Lidge here:

''It's really just a matter of being out there and not getting the job done. I don't feel good because of that,'' he said. ''If the fans are booing they're booing, but we need to give them something to cheer about.''

Using the royal "we" there, Brad?

Lidge needs to be selling used cars. And Garner can join him if he keeps running Lidge out there to blow leads against one of the worst teams in baseball.

City to contribute to UTSA athletic park

The E-N reports that the new City bond issue will contain $5.5 million for UTSA's proposed athletic complex.

I think it's great that the city is doing this. First, we have far fewer parks than other cities, especially compared to Austin. SA is also in need of more places for kids to play sports.

Personally, I'm in favor of UTSA having a greater athletic profile. If UTSA is going to be a bigger part of this city, as it wants and should be, then athletics is going to play a role in that. UTSA's facilities at this point are terrible. Improving them will help everyone.

Legendary St. Mary's coach to enter SA Sports Hall of Fame

When you go to a St. Mary's basketball or volleyball game and root the Rattlers on in the state-of-the-art, 3,500 seat Greehey Arena, keep in mind that it wouldn't be there but for Buddy Meyer.

Congratulations to Coach Meyer. From a tough first season to the NAIA title, the Express-News discusses his enshrinement in the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame.

Because one Robert Horry is enough

Gregg Popovich says the Spurs aren't interested in Chris Webber. Good. One overpaid geriatric is enough. The Spurs need to get younger to keep up with the Mavs and Suns. Getting Chris Webber is pointless.

Shakeup could be in store for Spurs

The lineup around the the core of Spurs (Duncan, Parker, Ginobili) may be changing. I can't remember the last big shakeup the Spurs had, or needed.

The Express-News explains that Corey Maggette may be wearing Silver & Black soon.
